A wide range of surgical services are available under the two main teams: General Surgery and Trauma Surgery
General Surgery
General - The largest surgical division within the Department of Surgery and at Grady Hospital. General Surgery includes care for various abdominal disorders and includes colorectal surgery, bariatric surgery, laparoscopy and more.
Oncology – Expert diagnosis and treatment of cancer, especially breast cancer, is provided by surgical oncologists, operating at two outpatient clinics and three weekly breast screening clinics.
Colorectal - Specializing in colorectal and anal disease, our colorectal surgeons perform colonoscopies and surgeries weekly.
Trauma Surgery
Trauma - For serious injuries and conditions requiring immediate surgery, our trauma surgeons are board-certified in both general surgery and critical care. The trauma team covers Grady Hospital every fourth day and each member is also engaged in scientific and/or clinical research.
Vascular – Treating diseases and disorders of blood vessels and arteries, these surgeons also support the trauma team. In addition, vascular care includes outpatient services for chronic wound care of the lower extremities.
Critical Care – The surgical critical care team provides 24-hour in-house care, operating in a closed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), with detailed input and recommendations from the primary surgical team.

General Rotation Information

The surgery clerkship is an eight week rotation, further divided up into different specialties within surgery. The first week will consist of orientation and lectures, and the last week will have lectures and study time You may be expected to come to conference during the last week. The rotation is divided into General Surgery and Trauma, which are three weeks each.
Both General surgery and trauma are further divided into different specialties each week. General surgery consists of one week of general surgery, one week of colorectal surgery and one week of surgical oncology. Trauma consists of one week of SICU, one week of trauma, and one week of vascular surgery.
