Overview
The general surgery block is divided into three subdivisions. They are Colorectal surgery, Surgical oncology/Endocrine surgery, and General surgery. You will spend approximately one week in each of these subspecialties before completing the general surgery block. You are expected to preround on your patients in the morning before official rounds which typically start around 6a.m. You are responsible for seeing three patients at most but keep in mind that this may change depending on who you are rounding with. The patient list can be obtained from your intern/residents when you arrive in the morning. You are in charge of distributing the patients among yourselves. After rounds you will then follow the schedules below for your particlular subspecialty. Each student on the general surgery block will also be assigned a call day each week. Call starts at 7a.m. and ends at 7p.m. On these days you will contact the intern/resident on call to inform them that you will be on call with them and ask them to let you know when they see consults.
